Time for some more Balkan music. Slavic Soul Party! is another fine group scheduled to play at this year’s Golden Festival. They hail from New York City and claim to be the city’s #1 brass band for BalkanSoul GypsyFunk. Instead of sticking to a traditional Balkan sound, Slavic Soul Party! play a lot of styles they have found within the city. You can hear gospel, techno, funk, dub, jazz and Latin influences working their way into the band’s throbbing grooves.
“The players have the muscle and know-how to make Balkan sounds crackle with NYC energy… we strongly recommend you witness it live and direct.” – TimeOut NY
Most of the band’s members have backgrounds in jazz. The group features John Carlson (trumpet), Tim Vaughn (trombone), Matt Musselman (trombone), Peter Hess (sax & clarinet), Peter Stan (accordion), Chris Stromquist (drums), Ron Caswell (tuba), Matt Moran (drums & vibraphone) and Kenneth Warren (trumpet & truba). They have spent plenty of time working with other musicians and Boban Marković Orkestar as well as Galactic have learned some of their tunes. Besides their performance at the upcoming Golden Festival, you can catch Slavic Soul Party! every Tuesday at Barbès in Brooklyn. Watch them perform “Baltika” at Club Helsinki in Hudson, NY below.
