Slavic Soul Party! – “Jackson”
New York Underground Tapes
The last time Slavic Soul Party! was featured on Splinters & Candy, they were appearing at the Golden Festival. Since then, the band’s been busy supporting their latest album, New York Underground Tapes, on Barbès Records. Now they’re gearing up for the ultimate release party aboard the Cabana on June 24th. The boat boards at E23rd and FDR at 6pm for a three hour celebration on the East River. Limited tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets. Matt Moran, SSP!’s drummer and bandleader, says the band wanted to do something different to mark the release of New York Underground Tapes.
“From the beginning, we didn’t want to play in a club to celebrate our album. We wanted to channel that expansive thrill of the unusual. We want to break cycles and expectations of going to a concert or club. What better way to do that than to get people dancing in the middle of the East River, looking at the city?” – Matt Moran
In 2011, SSP!’s preferred Brooklyn studio was destroyed when a rooftop water tower collapsed. In response, the band began to write new material and asked their family, friends and fans to help out by chipping into a Kickstarter fund. The result is a record created by the people for the people. Working independently, SSP! distributes their digital music through iTunes, but the desirable red vinyl LP and 7″ comes directly from the band. They have even issued a limited edition wax cylinder to show their dedication to the preservation of analog culture.
Easily one of the most exciting Balkan brass bands around, SSP! delivers delicious Serbian & Bulgarian dance numbers alongside Brazilian samba reggae and Duke Ellington Orchestra inspired funk arrangements. Mexican, Romani (Gypsy), Jewish and American roots give the band a diverse range of musical heritage to choose from. If you want Balkan Gypsy soul funk, you can’t go wrong with NYC’s official #1 brass band.
