Medeski Martin & Wood – The Dropper

Medeski Martin and Wood have been one of my favorite bands for a long time. At one point during my teenage years I seriously debated dropping the guitar for keyboards because I loved how much sound John Medeski got from his organ, piano and keyboards. Needless to say I didn’t drop the guitar but I did pick up playing piano on the side. They are one of the best bands I’ve seen live as they always improvise effortlessly to keep each composition new. They have expanded from a jazz trio into the most diverse trio I’ve heard.

This song “The Dropper” comes from their most ambitious and experimental album of the same name. Look how Medeski attacks those keyboards when the song kicks into high gear. Could these guys be having more fun? Kicking off their 20th anniversary this year, they have started to release 20 new songs on their website to celebrate. Check them out at mmw.net.
