Clearwater is an outstanding nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of the mighty Hudson River. As stewards of the river, Clearwater educates the public and promotes hands-on experiences through it’s Clearwater sloop which is recognized today as America’s Environmental Flagship.
For the past several decades, Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival (aka Clearwater Festival) has exposed the Hudson River Valley to diverse music from around the world. This year’s edition promises to bring together some of today’s finest performers, young and old, representing a multitude of musical genres. All of these acts mingle together and create an atmosphere unlike any other American music festival.
“Music, politics, culture — they’re all tangled up! Hooray for tangling!” – Pete Seeger, founder of the Clearwater Festival
Global diversity is an ongoing theme at Clearwater Festivals and 2013’s lineup features the most international roster in years. Brooklyn’s Afrobeat ensemble Antibalas rub shoulders with Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, Red Baraat, The Klezmatics and Vieux Farka Touré. Pete Seeger & Lorre Wyatt, Judy Collins, Kris Kristofferson, Buffy-Sainte Marie, Joanne Shenandoah, Acoustic Hot Tuna and Mavis Staples are just some of the other prestigious names on the schedule.
While the festival is an important musical gathering, it also is known for its zero waste sustainability and accessibility, offering wheelchairs and American Sign Language interpreters throughout the event. Any revenue generated by the festival goes toward Clearwater’s numerous educational programs and environmental and social justice costs as well as sloop Clearwater repairs.
The Clearwater Festival is set for June 15 & 16 at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, NY in Westchester County. Get your tickets at clearwaterfestival.org. With tremendous food, singing, dancing and sailing on the Hudson, what more could you ask for?
