The Bombay Royale – You Me Bullets Love

The Bombay Royale release their debut album, You Me Bullets Love, today on HopeStreet Recordings. The Bombay Royale take the best of vintage Indian cinema music and mix it with Hindi and Bengali vocals, solid funk, disco breaks and psychedelic surf guitar. The large horn section, spaghetti western guitar, tabla, vintage synthesizers and organs, as well as sitars and strings are all put together to recreate the classic Bollywood sound of the past. Starring vocalists Parvyn Kaur Singh as “The Mysterious Lady” and Shourov Bhattacharya as “The Tiger,” You Me Bullets Love is so authentic, you will think this is a lost gem from the 60s. Even the packaging resembles a vintage Indian movie poster. The album serves as a soundtrack to a story of espionage, excitement, extended dance sequences and the eternal power of true love.

The golden age of Bollywood cinema was a time of extravagance and experimentation. The music followed a similar path, with genres melding together to create an undeniably funky and sophisticated soundtrack to the exuberant films. These vintage recordings have long been objects of desire for vinyl crate diggers from around the world. Musical director Andy Williamson (“The Skipper”) formed The Bombay Royale to bring the hidden musical gems of that lost era out into the light of day. The classic composers, R.D. Burman, Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi, are household names in India, but they deserve to be known throughout the rest of the world. The Bombay Royale have set out to remind people about classic Indian music that still sounds incredibly fresh today.

This mighty group is comprised of a slew of musicians that have been assembled in Melbourne, Australia. The band made an instant impact at the Australasian World Music Festival (appearing alongside Nigerian funk legend Femi Kuti). The Bombay Royale create the perfect balance of vintage material and original songs. Even their recording techniques sound like a blast from the past, full of warmth and flavor. Grab the beautiful gatefold LP or CD at your local record store. For a taste, watch the excellent video for the title track, “You Me Bullets Love.”
