The Golden Festival is January 13th and 14th at Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn. Let’s take a look at a terrific vocal group that will be performing this year. Black Sea Hotel are a group of vocalists from Brooklyn who sing Bulgarian music. Joy Nirenstein, Willa Roberts, Sarah Small and Corinna Snyder got together in 2007 and challenged each other to form a quartet to harmonize their distinct voices together. Inspired by the famous Bulgarian music of Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares (The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices), Black Sea Hotel decided to rearrange many of the songs written for large vocal groups and work them into four parts. The group has found new ways to use melody, harmony and rhythm to tell ancient stories.
Black Sea Hotel’s harmonies are outstanding and the group has a fantastic appreciation of Bulgarian heritage. They will fit in nicely among the many brass bands at this year’s Golden Festival. Take a listen to “Spava Mi Se” below from their self-titled album available at cdbaby.
