Since their are only a handful of new releases this week, we will shift our attention to a great festival coming to New York City in January. globalFEST 2012 is set for January 8th at Webster Hall. 12 artists will perform on 3 stages, showcasing a diverse array of talent from across the globe. Today we take a look at BélO from Haiti.
BélO, whose given name is Jean Bélony Murat, is an artist and activist who is passionate about helping others who are less fortunate. He went to university to be an accountant and then decided to devote his life to music and release his first album, Lakou Trankil, in 2005. He and his band incorporate jazz, worldbeat, rock, reggae and the Afro-Haitian traditional rhythm known as ragganga into their sound. BélO was honored with the Radio France International Discoveries award in 2006. He has great music videos and is a terrific performer. Below he plays “Mizik a Jah” in Haiti on Ayiti Deploge. Enjoy this great solo number.
