De La Soul has always been ahead of the curve and now two members from the group (Plug 1/Pos & Plug 2/Dave) have started up a new project entitled First Serve. Their first record is due to drop April 2nd and we’ve already got a tasty video for the lead single, “Must B the Music.” The group is based around a storyline where Queens rappers Jacob “Pop Life” Barrow (Plug 1) and Deen Whitter (Plug 2) are working to make their names as rappers.
The First Serve album tells the story of two dreamers in a basement struggling to start their musical career, the battles they face, through to the point that they eventually release their debut single, ‘make it big’ and their hard work and persistence finally pays off. As we know that is rarely where the story ends and the story of First Serve is no different. Taking place in an animated world that could have been imagined by Hawley Pratt on Magic Mushrooms, the high spirited and often hilarious journey is pure old school hip-hop; skits, disco, beats, funk, quips, burns and hustlin’ all included.
As you can see in the video for “Must B the Music” below, the group has designed a wild video that is filled with animation reminiscent of the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. But more importantly the song shows Pos and Dave throwing down their mix of comedy and style. There is a lot of promise here and I’m sure First Serve’s self-titled debut on PIAS Recordings will turn a lot of heads on April 2nd.
