Meet Russia’s experimental odyssey, EXIT project. Moscow’s artistic band sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard before. Sephardic grooves and jazz based compositions mix the energy of a rock show with the subtlety of a performance recital. The music is wild and engaging as you never know what to expect. Their extended live pieces take you on a journey, twisting and turning with violin, saxophones, flute, didgeridoo, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums and tabla, displaying a wide range of musical influences. Their globally inflicted music, dubbed “art-fusion,” belongs to the underground scene happening in Moscow, explains EXIT project’s drummer, Vladimir “Big” Glushko.

“We’re part of the contemporary cultural underground here in Moscow and in Russia, art-fusion as we call it, that has never tried to be fashionable or sexy. The aesthetic behind it is quite eclectic and combines jazz, ethnic, electronic, classical and experimental artists together in the true creative pursuit. What we do falls out of any stylistic mainstream.” – Vladimir “Big” Glushko

Where else can you hear a funked out dub version of John Zorn’s “Meholalot” complete with heavy bass and screeching violins? EXIT project delivers cosmic musical harmony with an eclectic approach. Their latest release, LiveSplashes, was recorded during a performance at the Gogol’ Club in Moscow in 2011. This live document shows the band doesn’t lose anything on stage. In fact, they gain everything as their sound is boosted by the atmosphere of the audience. Listen to a sample of the album above or at soundcloud. EXIT project’s lineup includes Roman “RO-mix” Smirnov (guitars, programming, vocals), Oleg Smirnov (guitars), Vladimir “Big” Glushko (drums), Jon Kukaryamba (percussion, vocals), Kirill Parenchuk (soprano sax, tabla), Maria Logofet (violin) and Anastasia Boguslavskaya (sax). The collective’s East-meets-West Russian soul approach is irresistible. Don’t miss LiveSplashes and if you get the chance, you must see EXIT project in person.
