This is a special show in tribute to my mentor, Akenataa Hammagaadji of First World Music. He helped me get this show on WVKR and has been a constant source of inspiration. This week he ended his African music show on WVKR after thirteen years. In celebration of First World Music, today’s show is entirely comprised of music from the African diaspora. Songs from Cape Verde, Algeria, Haiti, Guadeloupe, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Benin, Mali and beyond.

Today’s show features an incredible selection of music from Chile, USA, England, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Italy, Algeria, Haiti, Cameroon, Mali and beyond. Set your ears for maximum reception.
The latest offering from Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba, Ba Power, features the hardest sound of any of their records with the overdrive and wah-wah on the ngoni cranked up and a drum kit holding down the foundation for the group, with additional rhythm coming from the calabash, yabara, tamani and tamaba. Even though the album has a bit of a crunch, there’s still plenty of funk swinging between the notes.
