M.A.K.U. SoundSystem is the Afro-Colombian sound you’ve been looking for. Featuring eight members, mostly from Colombia, they weave together a sound that utilizes all of the diverse styles found across the African Diaspora. Based in Queens, this group features a broad mix of brass, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, electronics and vocals. Their music is always danceable as the grooves twist and turn from slow funk to quick afrobeat.
They have a nice EP entitled Makumbala available on bandcamp. Be sure to check it out as it really showcases their incredible range of sound, while capturing the live energy of their playing.
