Justin Ancheta – “Wander”
Plant

Bay Area musician, teacher, artist and activist Justin Ancheta has been working hard on a unique style of folk music he dubs Folklyrico Americana. By mixing together reggae with folk, funk, jazz and rock, Ancheta and his band have carved their own musical niche. Ancheta has shared the stage with Joan Baez, the Wailers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Charles Neville, Ricky Skaggs and other internationally respected artists. Over the past four years, he has self-released five albums, selling over 12,000 CDS himself. By utilizing Kickstarter, Ancheta was able to finish up his first full-length studio release and the resulting Plant is now available in CD & Digital form.

Recorded across Northern California over the course of three years, Plant features a collection of material Ancheta has worked on over the past eight years. By working hard, bustling the streets and selling CDs by hand, Ancheta built up a reputation in the Bay Area music scene. An accomplished singer, composer, classical guitarist and tres player, Ancheta’s ability to adjust and adapt explains why the music on Plant is so fascinating. With a Filipino/Spanish/American father from Hawaii and an English/Norwegian/American mother with ancestors going back to the first settlers on American Indian land, it’s no wonder there are so many musical influences heard on this recording. Within Plant there are traces of Filipino folk songs, Hawaiian reggae, flamenco and klezmer. Aligning these multicultural sounds with sweet grooves and positive lyrics, Ancheta will impress you every step of the way. With over a dozen musicians supporting him, including trumpeter Will Magid, Ancheta and his band are comfortable switching gears at the drop of a hat, which results in a rewarding listening experience.

Pickup Plant at your local record store or check out Justin Ancheta on bandcamp. The CD includes a foldout lyric sheet with a full color poster on the opposite side, all housed in nice cardboard packaging. Don’t miss the videos for “Better Predicament” and “Downward” and take a look at Ancheta’s tour dates to see when he will be in your area. There is plenty more to come from Ancheta, so be on the lookout for more of his releases later this year.
